Establish a need for your product or service within your target market. If necessary, change or adapt your business to suit the needs of market. Research your competition, how much is there and can you offer something they can’t? Learn from them and implement your findings within your own business.

In other words, don’t try and be something for everyone. Concentrate on your particular skills and focus your efforts on that.
3. Don’t Overspend
Keep overheads as low as possible and only purchase items if absolutely necessary. Keep a budget and ensure cash flow is in line with expenses.
4. Promote
Constant promotion is important for the growth of your business. Your customers need to know where you are and what you do. Promotion does not have to be expensive. Depending on the type of business you run there are lots of cost effective forms of promotion available.
5. Have a Contingency Plan
All businesses go through difficult times so it is important to learn to read the warning signs and recognise any signs of trouble. By pinpointing problems early you may be able to prevent or reduce the impact. A well-thought out contingency plan is important to ensure smooth running of your business through rough times.

Your customers are your business so treat them accordingly. Always be professional, courteous and deliver a quality product or service. A happy customer will be a repeat customer and will be happy to tell their friends and colleagues about the great service you offer.
7. Treat Your Business Seriously
If you are working from home for the first time it is easy to fall into the trap of blurring your home life with your working life. Set yourself working hours, have an office which you can close the door if necessary and ensure your family and friends know that you are actually working and not available for social visits just because you are at home.
